When I finally arrived in Surabaya, I was tired. I had just come back from watching sunrise over Bromo that morning. Walking through Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya’s spacious lobby, I thought to myself, I couldn’t wait to rest in my room. At the reception desk I asked to sign in and was given the option of going up to the Horizon Club to do the check in.
The porter carried the bags to the lift and we were whisked up to the 12th floor to a spacious reception area. Through the full-length windows I could see Surabaya city laid out in front of me. I sat down in a comfortable chair and was immediately asked if I wanted a drink. I was starting to feel very relaxed.
The Room
Shangri-La Surabaya has 8 room types and a total of 383 rooms. I was staying at their Horizon Club Deluxe Room. It is a Deluxe Room with Horizon Club privilege. The Horizon Club room is available on 11th, 12th and 14th floor only. I was staying at their on 11th floor, it gives super easy access to the Horizon Club. The Shangri-La Horizon Club Deluxe Room was spacious and tastefully furnished with a working area, seating area and a large king sized bed.
The color scheme was a mix of pastel colours for the cushions and fabrics combined with the shades of brown of the furniture. It gives the room a warm and homey feeling. The Horizon Club comes with a lot of privileges, one of which was the super fast and convenient check-in.
In the afternoon the Horizon Club offers afternoon coffee between 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm and evening cocktails from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm (wine is served and food is available). The cocktails in the evening is a nice way to relax after a hard day at work or a busy day exploring the town.
The Facilities
Shangri-La Surabaya has a wide range of facilities. If you are feeling active you can visit the aerobics / dance studio, tennis courts, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room and swimming pool. There is also the large reception area where you can work downstairs and several restaurants.
My favorite part of Shangri-La Surabaya was the outdoor swimming pool out the back of the hotel. There were sun loungers and covered seats surrounding the swimming pool. An artificial waterfall added to the ambience with the sound of running water. Drinks and food could be ordered at the outside bar. Talking about the food…
The Breakfast
I visited Shangri-La Surabaya once in 2011 or 2012, and I was pretty familiar with Shangri-La Jakarta since I arranged quite a few of events there when I was working in the corporate sector. One thing that I couldn’t forget about Shangri-La is their super delicious food and amazing selections for breakfast. Shangri-La Surabaya didn’t disappoint.
The Jamoo restaurant, which is the breakfast venue, is located on the ground floor with a view overlooking the swimming pool. In fact, there are several seats available outdoors. Surrounding the edges of the restaurant were the buffet stations.
When I stayed there was a huge range of food to choose from for breakfast ranging from traditional menu (Indonesian), Western food, Japanese Sushi and Chinese dumplings. There was also a large selection of cheese at the cheese section. The only problem was, my tummy was too small to fit all of the food on offer at the Shangri-La buffet.
Final Thoughts
The Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya is one of the best hotels in the city. It is a great choice for people who are travelling to Surabaya for business or for leisure. Shangri-La is also in a strategic location; there is easy access to some of Surabaya’s must visited places and the Surabaya Airport is only a 30-minute drive away. Amenities are superb and the food is delicious.
P.S. If you have the chance I’d recommend the Horizon Club, it really helped me be productive while I am on the road. 🙂
