Trekking Merapi volcano is one of the most popular outbound activities in Yogyakarta. You leave Yogyakarta late at night in a shared car. The hike starts late at night. This is the best time of the day to climb. The temperature is cool and fresh. As you climb Mt Merapi volcano you will see the twinkling lights of the villages in the valleys below. You arrive at the summit of the volcano just before sunrise. As the sun comes up over the horizon you get a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
Hiking Merapi Volcano is an all night trek. You’re picked up from your hotel at 10 pm and return to Yogyakarta the next day at around 1 pm. It’s 1 hour drive to the volcano and a 4 to 5 hour hike to the summit. The trek is a shared tour and a minimum of two participants are needed. Merapi trekking includes shared transport, entrance ticket to the national park and an experienced guide. Review the table below for more information about Trekking Merapi Volcano before making a booking.
– Pick up at 10:00 pm.
– Drive to Merapi National Park.
– Sign in at the base camp.
– Arrive at the summit for sunrise.
– Trek back to the car park.
– Return to Yogyakarta at 1:00 pm.
– Entrance fee to the Merapi National Park.
– Professional guide to lead the trek.
– Breakfast (serve after the climb), 1 bottle of mineral water and a warm cup of tea.
– Waterproof coat and/ or windbreaker.
– A headlamp if you have one (a torch is provided).
– Additional mineral water.
– Snack or energy bar.
You’ll Always Remember
- The beauty of sunrise over Java from the peak of Merapi volcano.
- Stare into the most active crater in Indonesia from the top of Merapi.
- The feeling of satisfaction when you finally finish the hike (you’ll understand why).
The Key Information
You leave Yogyakarta in shared transport at 10pm at night. It’s a one hour drive from Yogyakarta to Merapi National Park and the base camp at New Sello. After signing in at the camp you can relax and have a hot tea. You will start hiking the volcano shortly after 12pm. An experienced guide will lead you up the volcano. For every three people hiking the volcano there is one guide. The guide will only go as fast as the slowest climber.
The hike to the top of Mt Merapi volcano will take you 4-5 hours depending on your level of fitness. From the top of the volcano you have an almost panoramic view of the surrounding countryside for sunrise. If you have a nice camera make sure to bring it. You can get really spectacular photos from here. After climbing the peak you’ll return to the plateau where the guide will cook you some breakfast.
The descent back down to the base of the volcano is tough. The hike will take you 3-7 hours depending on how fit you are and how much energy you have left. You’ll be happy when you finally reach the car park. At the end of the tour the driver will drop you off at your hotel in Yogyakarta.
Hiking Merapi Volcano is tough. It’s worth it for the beautiful views you’ll see from the peak of the volcano as the sun rises over the horizon. If you love the outdoors then you will really enjoy trekking Merapi. We can arrange the Merapi trekking package for you. Fill in the form below to make a booking.

Hi Firsta, I hope this write-up finds you well.
Together with my wife and a group of friends, we decided to go to Yogyakarta. We planned to climb Mt Merapi. Along the way there was alot of change of plans. Firsta stayed patient and accomodated to our changes such as adding passengers to the trip.
All in all, Firsta arranged for us a climb up Mt Merapi with experienced and professional guides, 1-day short trek of Gunung Api Purba(with guide) + Sri Gethuk Waterfall with guide too + Sandboarding to end of the day. The day after, we started early with Tembih Cycling tours. It was great experience cycling through the villages past rice fields and plantations. We even get to cuddle some goats too.
Each day and each instance, our drivers were punctual and right on time in picking us up from our hotel. I would like to commend and recommend Firsta when you travel to any part of Java. Thumbs up! Thank you Firsta!
Hi, my partner and I decided on our first trip to Yogyakarta would try to fit in both a treck up Merapi and a visit to Borobadur. We would try to complete this with a little over three days.
Firsta was wonderful in advising us the best way to do this and then to make all the bookings for us.
We would definitely want to come back to Yogyakarta and once again tap the knowledge of Firsta.
Hi I am interested in the Climbing Merapi tour but I am going to be a solo traveler. Is it possible to do it with just one person or is it strictly two people?
Hi Jeanelsy. Yes it is possible to to climb Merapi as a single traveller. There are normally other guests who join the shared tour. If no other guests join on the travel date and you still want to do the climb you will need to pay the fee for two people (Rp 900,000).
Hi, is the Merapi still open for hiking? I’d love to climb it one day. But I heard there are some limits due to vulcanic activity.
Greetings from Jogja.
Hi Willem,
Sorry for the delay in replying this comment. It is still close for hiking due to the volcanic activities.
Greetings from Yogya too!
Hi Jeansley,
When are you heading to climb? As I’m also doing it likely on 9th sept solo. We can combine to save the cost. Thanks
Hi 🙂
I am planning to hike Merapi with 2 of my friends prolly on December. Is there any places that you can recommend us to stay near Merapi?
Hi Hazim. I would recommend staying in Yogyakarta rather than close to Merapi.
Hi! I intend to climb Merapi Saturday September 24th. I am on my own. Anybody interested to join?
I am male, Dutch, 53 yrs old, experienced in climbing 4000+ in the Alpes.
HI, I would like to ask for the Merapi Trekking. Plan for next year April 2017. 2 Person. I have few question to ask.
– Usually what is the time to start trekking up to the Summit for the Sunrise?
– How Long is going to take from Ground to the Summit
– What time usually for the Sunrise?
– From Ground to Summit then back to Ground total hour?
– What place you recommend us for staying / put our luggage since the climb will be at midnight and all we need is to put luggage inside and claim on next day morning.
– I have few other question. Please email me. Thanks.
Hi Firsta, is possible to arrange transport from Merapi to Borobudur then to my hotel ? If possible, how much is the fees?
Hi. If you are joining the Merapi trekking this is not possible. I would recommend visiting Borobudur on the day before you do the hiking. Alternatively you can do it on the day after you return from the hike. Hope that helps Akey.
Hello
I wish to do the following activities:
1. Manohara Borobudur sunrise
2. Mount Merapi Terkking
3. Gua Jomblang
What is the recommended itinerary? Do I book it individually via the website?
Appreciate if we could correspond via email.
Thank you.
Best regards
JC
Hi Juncong, I’ll reply to your enquiry by email.
Appreciate that, Firsta! – JC
Hi ,
Im interested in the Merapi sunrise trekking tour on 12/10 night for 2 pax …
Kindly email me with the availablity ?
Ive read many ‘warning’ reviews about the climb being very tedious and am a little hesitant now.. I do sports, 3 times a week for an hour … but recently stopped for 2 weeks due to wrist strain.. so i am worried whether i will be able to keep up!
Hi Rebecca. It is indeed a tough climb and you do have to be reasonably fit for the climb. If you exercise twice a week though I am sure you will be fine. I have replied to your question with more detail via email.
Good day, Firsta!
Hope all is going well with you.
I’m travelling solo to Yogja and wish to hike Mt. Merapi on this coming Dec 31st, 2016. Is there any available slot that perhaps you can help to squeeze me in?
I planned to go easy after the hike like strolling at the market and some local food hunting and on the Jan 2nd maybe catch sunrise and sunset at the Borobudur and Prambanan Temple. Looking through that, would you suggest for me to stay in Jalan Prawirotaman or Malioboro? Sorry for the silly questions 🙂
Looking forward for your reply, Firsta!
Cheers,
Miwa
Hi Miwa,
People usually book the Merapi hike 2-5 days before the hike. At the moment there is no one register for 31st Dec 🙂 Just fill the booking form closer to your travel date.
My personal favourite area is Prawirotaman. Check this article to find where the best area to stay in Yogya (for you).
Hi, is this a group tour or private tour? We are 2 people plan to hike on 26th Dec night.
Hi Siang. This is a group tour. You can definitely join the hike. Just fill out the form.
Hi Firsha,
First of all, thank you for writing this because I really need this as I will be traveling to Yogyakarta next year in February. I will be staying there for 8 days and 7 nights. Is it possible for me to visit all of these places? Do you have any suggested itineary? Thanks
Hi Shafiq,
I am glad you found this useful. 8 days is a reasonable enough time to explore Yogyakarta highlights. Please let me know which places you would like to visit. Btw, there are several itineraries option on this page if you are looking for an inspiration.
Hi.
Im interested to this trekking tour. However, Im travelling alone to Jogjakarta and I wish to get into this tour. Could you let me know if there is any other participants joining as well. Im visiting on 14-17 April 2017.
Hi Chua,
We normally receive orders from other climbers a few days (2-5 days) before the trek. Please get in touch closer to your travel date.
Please keep in mind that pick up is within Yogyakarta city center only.
Hi,
How far in advance should we book? We will be in Yogyakarta around December 31. Is booking still possible?
Hi Jonathan,
2-5 days before is ok. Please book it here.
Hi Firsta,
Do you do pick ups from Borobodur? My wife and I would like to do the trek on 28th Feb night.
Thanks
Hi Uditha,
We can only do pick up from Yogyakarta city.
Hi Firsta,
We’re visiting Yogyakarta with our 8 year old daughter. Would it be ok for her to follow us on the climb up the Merapi? We’ve booked a trip to Yogyakarta on 12 March. We’re staying at The Phoenix Hotel..Can you advice how we can make a booking if our daughter can join us? Thanks!
Hi Rita. I wouldn’t recommend climbing Mount Merapi with an 8 year old. It’s a hard climb and it gets cold. If she was 11 or 12 I’d say it’s ok. The cost for Merapi trekking is Rp 450,000 per person. btw, I’ve also emailed you regarding your enquiry 🙂
Hi Firsta,
Thanks heaps for the helpful information. Is it possible to hike Mount Merapi during the Eid Al Fitri period say 27/06/2016? Silly me to choose these dates to travel but cheap tickets are not refundable. Boo. 🙁
Hi Siew,
It is possible, but very limited due to very limited amount of guide. Please do the reservation via website 1 month before.
Do you think that if my husband wanted to climb on Oct. 21st that it would be likely that there would be at least one other person climbing, so that it would not get cancelled?
Hi Elaine,
Yes there is a possibility. People usually book the tour 1-5 days before the travel date. You can get in touch with us again closer to your travel date. Please be advised that pick up area is within Yogyakarta city center.
Hi,
Is it possible to arrange the pick up and drop off at different location?
We would like to visit Borobodur temple after the hike so could we dropped off at the temple after the hike instead back to our hotel at Malioboro?
Hi Shamini. Unfortunately it’s impossible to drop you off by Borobudur. It’s a shared tour and Borobudur is a long drive outside of town. We have sent you an email.
Hi,
I would like to join the Trek during the last week of August.
I have some queries on the Trek, please drop me an email to discuss further
Hi Keshav,
I will send you an email shortly.
Hi,
I am visiting Jogja as a solo traveller and would like to find out if there are any tours booked between 20-22 October. Is it possible for me to join any of these tours?
Hi See,
We sent you an email 5 days ago and let us know if you received it ok.
Hi!
I’m interested in going to a hike at Merapi but I’m traveling solo. Would you have any tours on Sep 29 that has already been setup?
Ruby

Hi Firsta,
We are planning to drive from Jakarta to Bali by car and visiting all the nice places and volcanoes on the way – can you recommend a driver (with car) and guide ex Jakarta?
Timing will be October 7th to 14th !
Appreciate your advice!
Adrian
Hi Adrian,
At the moment we don’t have any suitable recommendations for a driver for your route. Sorry! and I hope you find someone suitable for your trip.
Safe travels!
Hi there, I would like to go for a hike on the 11th of October.
I am staying in Malioboro. May I know if the hiking is safe? And reconfirm the price is 450,000 Indonesian Rupiah?
Hi Mohd Nashrin,
We have sent an email. In regards to the travel date, I am assuming it is not 11th Oct since it has passed.
Look forward to your reply through email. Safe travels.
Hi Firsta,
I’m keen to climb Mt Merapi on the 16th Dec. I’m gonna be a solo traveller. Wondering if I could join any other groups climbing on the same date.
Hi Rajiv,
We have sent you an email a few days ago. Look forward to hearing back from you.
Hey there, i really wanna try and hike mt merapi but i am not a sporty person. is it still okay? but i do not have any sickness like asthma etc just that i do not exercise on a daily basis.
Hi Syafizah, we have sent you an email about this request.
Hi Firsta,
Is climbing to the top of Mt. Merapi open this February 2018? Or no climbing season by that time?
Thanks to confirm by email please.
Dear H, we have sent an email to you and it bounced back as the email doesn’t exist.
Yes, Merapi trekking is open in February. If rain (heavy rain) happens on the date that you want to climb Merapi the tour will be cancelled as it is dangerous climbing the volcano in the night while it’s raining. The tour company will keep you updated should the tour be cancelled due to heavy rain. Sometimes when it rains in Yogyakarta, it doesn’t rain in Merapi and vice versa.
Thanks Firsta
Will then reconsider Mt Merapi when there is no chance of rain 🙂
Hi H, I’ll get in touch through email.
I am back Firsta. Mt Merapi is whispering to my ear saying I have to consider hiking since I will be in Jakarta this February. Can you drop a message to me please? I have tons of questions and I do not wish to bore other readers here. thanks much!
Hello!
My friends and I are considering trekking Merapi during the first week of March. Typically during this month, what’s the likelihood of cancellation due to rain in the night? We want to weigh the risks involved, as we’ll be travelling to Indonesia just for this. Thanks!
(Please email me instead.)
Hi Mich,
We have sent an email to you 3 days ago. Look forward to hearing back from you.
Hi Firsta,
I’d like to do Merapi trekking and also some other things. As I read on your site you’re helping to organise other trips too. So I’d like to ask you about those too if its possible.? I’ll be in Yogyakarta between 26-30 maybe 31st of march. Please email me! Thanks in advice!
Hi Firsta,
I’m interested in Merapi trekking in march. Can you email me please? Thanks in advice!
Hi Firsta,
Sorry I did a mistake before. Can you reply me on this email adress please?
Hi Kate, we have sent you an email. Look forward to hearing back from you.
Hey Firsta,
I’ve sent through a booking/enquiry 2 days ago – could you please check? Thanks!!
Hi Emily,
We have sent an email 2 days ago. Maybe check your spam / junk folder?
I’ll resend it.
hey Firsta, would like to know whether the tour package for mt. merapi included sending us back to the pick up point? or are we on our own after the hiking session? or is there any other way for us to get back to town which you can recommend us ? thank you.

Also since I’m climbing solo, is it possible for you to arrange for a guide as well. Look forward to hear from you soon.

Sincerely hoping it does 🙂
Thanks
Anna
What is the update on Merapi please.

Are there Jeep tours of Mt Merapi for just ONE person?
I only want to see Merapi and what’s on it — I don’t want any add-ons for other attractions in the area.

Hi Tim,
I’m not sure, but this is the first time Merapi has been closed for an extended period of time.
What I can do is to give you an update closer to your travel date.
Maybe contact us again at the end of July?

Hi!
Is the Merapi open nowdays for trekking?
Regards,
Hi Sara, at the moment it is still closed for hiking activities.
Is Merapi open for hiking at the moment. Would like to do it this year with my partner. 🙂
Hi Del,
The volcano just erupted 2 days ago. At the moment it is not open for climbing, unfortunately. The volcano has been quite active for a while – closed for climbing since end of 2019.
Hi Del,
Is there another volcano or somewhere similar that we can trek up to see lava besides Mt Merapi ?
Thank you.
Hi CK Lai,
Mount Merapi is an active volcano near Yogyakarta. However, even though I’ve climbed it three times, I don’t think you can see molten/hot lava there. Perhaps you’re referring to cooled lava? You can see the crater with some smoke, but not visibly flowing lava. When there is visible flowing lava, it’s usually unsafe and climbing to the summit is prohibited.
Another nearby option for climbing (but not for seeing lava) is the dormant volcano, Mount Merbabu, which sits right next to Mount Merapi. You can also consider Mount Lawu, located on the border of Central and East Java.
