Join an early morning bicycle tour and explore the countryside surrounding Yogyakarta. The Jogja cycling tour takes you out through the rice terraces and villages surrounding the city. The halfway point of the tour is the Imogiri tombs, where the family of the sultan of Yogyakarta is buried. This complex is located on a forested hill. You have to climb a steep flight of stairs to reach the top, which gives you a great view of the surrounding countryside. After eating breakfast at a traditional Indonesian restaurant you cycle back towards Yogyakarta. It’s a great way to start the day and offers an interesting snapshot of life in the Javanese countryside.
The Jogja bicycle tour is a community development project, which makes it a great opportunity to connect with locals. The Yogya cycle tour can be done at any time of day. What to Expect
The bicycle tour starts in the village of Tembeh, which is 15 minutes outside of Yogyakarta. When you arrive in Tembeh you will be offered a cup of tea or a coffee. Almost as soon as the tour starts you are cycling along small country lanes and between paddy fields that are heavy with dew. This early in the morning the temperature is still fresh, which makes it a nice time to exercise.
It’s a 45 minute bicycle ride from Tembeh to the Imogiri royal tombs. Most of the ride is flat and for much of the journey you cross the open countryside. As you pass through the villages you catch snapshots of country life. You’ll see children going to school, farmers in the fields and people going about their daily routines.
At the Imogiri Royal Tombs you get off the bike. To reach the royal cemetery you need to climb a long set of stairs. It’s a five minute climb to the top of the hill where the cemetery is located. When you get to the top you can take a rest. After visiting the Imogiri Royal Tombs you go to a local restaurant to eat a traditional Javanese breakfast. It’s a tasty way to start the day. Then you get back on the bike for the last part of the Yogyakarta cycle tour. At the end of the tour you will be dropped off at your hotel.
