Travelling by private car you will head out of Yogyakarta towards the coastal area of Gunung Kidul. You quickly leave the city of Yogyakarta behind you and cross the flat farmland. The view as you rise out of the valley and into the hills is quite spectacular.
It takes an hour to reach Gua Jomblang from Yogyakarta. The Gua Jomblang resort is at the end of a long dirt path. You will be greeted at the visitor center by one of the staff of the Gua Jomblang resort. At 9:45 you will be strapped into your safety harness and you’ll see your first view of the enormous sinkhole. The adventure starts with you being lowered over the edge of the cliff into the sinkhole.
Once your group is at the bottom of the cliff you will be taken into the cave system. The first tunnel twists and turns deep into the ground. Eventually you will enter Grubug cave. This is the highlight of the tour. A hole in the roof of the cave lets light filter in creating a natural spotlight. It’s a spectacular view. Scroll back to the top and watch the video to see it for yourself.
After exploring Grubug Cave you return to the forest. You are then hoisted 60 meters in the air back to the top of the cliff for a late lunch. At the end of the caving your driver will bring you back to Yogyakarta. It doesn’t need to end here though. It’s great to combine your Gua Jomblang tour with one of the activities below.
